Old Rag Trailhead Parking Lot We meet by the “ranger shack”. The small parking lot has been permanently closed by the park. The hike is in the Central District of Shenandoah National Park (Between Thornton Gap, US Hwy 211 and Swift Run Gap, US Hwy 33). GPS Coordinates: 38.570278, -78.286667 Physical Address: 2093 Nethers Rd, Etlan, VA 22719 Note: This is the closest address for the parking lot. Another idea is to use the intersection of Nethers Rd and River Song Ln. Driving Directions: Finding the Trailhead from the North: * Take 66 W, and merge onto Lee Hwy/US-29 S via Exit #43A. (11.5 mi) * Merge onto US-211 W/US-29 BR S toward US-15 BUS/WARRENTON/LURAY. (2.0 mi) * Turn slight right onto US-211/FROST AVE. Continue to follow US-211 W. (26.9 mi) * Turn left onto BERRYVILLE PIKE/US-522. Continue to follow US-522. * Take US 522 to SR 231, which is 0.8 mi south of Sperryville, VA and 12.7 mi north of Madison, VA. * Go south 8.3 mi on SR 231, cross Hughes River, and immediately turn right (west) onto SR 602. * Stay on left side of Hughes River. * Stay on the same road and note that the route number changes to 601, 707, and then 600 even though you make no turns! * Do not cross Hughes River. * After 3.5 mi from SR 231, just beyond Nethers, VA, a Shenandoah National Park parking lot accommodates 200 cars. Finding the Trailhead from the South: * Take US 29 about 35 miles north to Madison, VA. * From Madison, take highway 231 north for 12.8 miles. * Turn left onto highway 602. * In 0.5 miles the road becomes highway 601. Continue on highway 601. * In 0.8 mile it becomes highway 707, and it becomes highway 600 about 1.7 miles later. * After 3.5 mi from SR 231, just beyond Nethers, VA, a Shenandoah National Park parking lot accommodates 200 cars. Public Transportation: There is no public transportation to, or in, Shenandoah National Park. NOTE: Please remember to take the leader(s) number(s) with you but please respect the fact that we are all volunteers and there is often no cell coverage at trailheads and varies according to service provider. If you call very close to hike time, please understand that we are very busy with pre-hike preparations for ourselves in addition to group sign in, pre-hike briefing, and then leading the hike. It is also very difficult to provide instructions to someone while following them too, hence providing very detailed directions on this separate page. Leaders are advised to not answer phones once a hike is started so we don't miss a turn on the trail due to the distraction of a call. Thank you for your understanding and see you there!
